Bin collections have restarted, 15 August 2022

All bin collection services have restarted in Elmbridge and Surrey Heath today following the period of strike action which was called off by the GMB Union on Friday.

Bins should be put out on their normal collection day which you can check using the collection calendar. However, the additional material that was not collected during the strike will likely impact on collection rounds and they may run later than usual.

It is also possible that some rounds will not complete on their usual day and will carry forward to the following day. If the crew does not empty your bin please leave it out. Missed collections can be reported as normal.

If your recycling  bin is full, cardboard that is folded, tied and dry can be left next to the bin and other recycling can be put out in a clear plastic bag.

Please continue to check this website for further updates and share the information with any neighbours who are not online. You can also check the service update pages for the latest news about the service in your area.

We apologise for the inconvenience that the strike action has caused and thank you for your understanding and patience as services return to normal.

Bin collections to restart, 12 August 2022

The strike action that affected bin collections in Elmbridge and Surrey Heath has now been called off by the GMB Union. As a result, all bin collection services are due to resume from Monday 15 August.

The strike, which started on Monday 1 August, had originally been planned to last until Friday 19 August before being extended by the GMB until 7 September.

From Monday 15 August, please put all bins out as normal on your usual collection day.

The resumption of the normal collection timetable from Monday will result in those residents who have been waiting the longest for the collection of their mixed recycling (and garden waste where relevant) to have these collected first. Please check your collection calendar here.

We will continue to make available clear sacks for the temporary storage of mixed recycling that cannot be accommodated in the mixed recycling bin. Once filled, these can be left alongside the mixed recycling bin for collection on the usual designated collection day.

We apologise for the concern and inconvenience the strike action will have caused and thank you for your understanding and patience as we have tried to protect the continued delivery of your clinical, food and rubbish bins over this period. Please continue to check the service update pages for the latest news in your area.

Bin collection strike action, 9 August 2022

Strike action is continuing to impact bin collections in Elmbridge and Surrey Heath.

The strike action by Amey’s bin collection crews who are members of the GMB Union is due to take place every day until Friday 19 August. It was suspended yesterday while talks between the GMB and Amey were facilitated by Acas, but has resumed today. Further talks are due to take place on Thursday 11 August.

In line with the continency plans, collections of clinical waste, food waste and rubbish are being prioritised and these are taking place in both areas.  If you are due a collection of these materials, please leave your bin out for collection as usual. If it is not emptied by 4pm, please report it as a missed collection.

It wasn’t possible to collect recycling or garden waste last week and Amey has advised that these collections will also not take place this week. Although recycling and garden waste bins cannot be emptied currently, it is helpful if they are reported as missed as it helps us monitor and manage the contract.

You can also visit the local service update page for the latest information in your area including links to collection points for clear plastic bags if you need those to store your recycling.

The strike action was voted for by GMB union members in a ballot related to pay settlement negotiations that have been taking place between Amey and the GMB.

We encourage residents to continue to check this website for further updates. Please also share the information with any neighbours who are not online.

We have been informed that Amey employees working on the waste collection and street cleaning services in Elmbridge and Surrey Heath, who are members of the GMB union, intend to take strike action from Monday 1 August to Friday 19 August.

If you are due to have a collection on Monday 1 August, please put your bin out as normal. If it is not emptied by 4pm please report it as a missed collection and leave the bin out. If this advice changes, we will share it on this website.
